Durango police name suspect in attempted armed robbery

38-year-old sought in connection with crime

Durango police have obtained an arrest warrant for a man suspected of attempting to rob three women Aug. 22 at gunpoint.

Durango resident Shayne Ray Chavez, 38, is sought in connection with the crime, which occurred around 6:30 p.m. in the east alley of the 900 block of Main Avenue.

Police are asking the public for any information that would lead to his arrest.

Chavez is described as a Hispanic male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, brown hair, brown eyes and about 160 pounds. He is known to frequent Aztec and Farmington as well as Durango.

Tattoos on Shayne Ray Chavez, who is being sought by the Durango Police Department on suspicion of attempted robbery.

He has several tattoos on his forearms and is considered armed and dangerous.

Video surveillance of the incident shows a man approaching the victims who were standing by a red SUV and parked motorcycles.

The public is advised not to attempt to apprehend Chavez.

Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Chavez is asked to call Central Dispatch at 385-2900, CrimeStoppers at 247-1112 or Detective Josh Newman at 375-4733.

Durango police used surveillance from area businesses to help identify the suspect.
