A pedestrian was struck and killed by an oncoming vehicle early Sunday morning in south Durango.

The incident, which happened in the 1300 block of South Camino del Rio in the northbound lane, remains under investigation as of 3:30 p.m. Sunday, and the Durango Police Department has yet to identify the suspect in the fatal hit-and-run crash.

Durango police Sgt. Chris Thomson said the incident took place in front of the Cenex Ampride gas station.

Investigators believe the incident took place around 7 a.m. Sunday and are not sure what the pedestrian was doing at the time they were hit. Northbound traffic was still restricted to one lane as of Sunday afternoon.

Police did not release the victim’s name because the case is ongoing and they wanted to allow time to notify family members.

DPD also has yet to identify the type of vehicle the suspect was driving because there have been few witnesses to the crash.

Police are unsure how fast the driver was moving at the time of the crash.

“We’re still in the middle of the scene right now. So it’s very much an active investigation. And so we hope to have more information later on this evening,” said Thomson at around 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Anyone with information about the case can contact Detective Kathy O’Toole at 759-6443.
