Durango Rafting Co. owner found dead at home

Cause of death is unknown; test results pending

The owner of Durango Rafting Co., Tom O’Keeffe, was discovered dead in his home Wednesday, said La Plata County Coroner Jann Smith.

O’Keeffe was last seen alive on Christmas Eve. Smith said she has not yet listed a cause of death for O’Keeffe.

Smith said she is waiting for the return of toxicology and histology (tissue) tests, which should take a couple of weeks, before pronouncing a cause of death.

But she said she does not suspect suicide, and O’Keeffe suffered from some medical conditions “that could have caused his death.”

Smith said carbon monoxide poisoning will be examined as a possible cause because a dog that was “very healthy” and “well taken care of” was also found dead at O’Keeffe’s residence in Durango.

Smith said she does not yet know the exact date of O’Keeffe’s death.
