Speakers will include:
Nancy Utter, who worked as a county planner in Durango before deciding to return to school in her 30s and pursue a new career as a naturopathic doctor. Her shift was driven by her passion to understand the links between healing people and preserving wild places in the world. “Heal the people, heal the plant,” is a mantra she cites often. She is now the owner and naturopathic doctor at Durango Natural Medicine.
Nicolas Cofman, who worked for years as a bush pilot, mostly in Africa. While he had been considering a second career more directly helping people, he didn’t decide to pursue a new direction until he survived a crash in 2011. Shortly after that, while in his early 40s, he attended dental school in Arizona. He has returned to Durango, practicing dentistry at Dental Associates of the Southwest.
Sean Jackson</CHARACTER>, who worked in newspapers across the Western Slope for most of his career. He balanced that work with his interest in railroads, working part time on trains as time permitted. Nearly 15 years ago, Jackson took a leap, quit his main job as a copy editor and began to work full time for the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, where he is now the car shop foreman.
Season 3 of Durango Diaries will continue at 6 p.m. Wednesdays at the Durango library through May. Upcoming event topics include:
APRIL 17: Bullying. Experts and victims of bullying will talk about how we as a community can work to prevent it. Speakers include Shane Nelson, Animas High School humanities teacher; Suzie Null, an associate professor of teacher education at Fort Lewis College who experienced bullying as a child; and Robbie Patla, a junior at Animas High School who has made it a mission to help students who experience bullying.MAY 8: People with a passion. What makes people join groups or play team sports? Our three speakers will talk about why they do what they do for fun – and how to get others involved. They will include: Daryl Hinderer, pickleball player; Scott Gibbs, train buff; and Gloria Macht, member of the Society for Creative Anachronism.MAY 22: War veterans. Five veterans of U.S. wars will talk about their service.
