Registration is now open for the Vallecito Lake Heavy Half Marathon, which will take place on May 13.

The 13.7 mile road and gravel course takes runners completely around the picturesque Vallecito Reservoir with a special section that runs across the Vallecito Dam.

The race starts behind the Rocky Mountain General Store in Bayfield. After exiting on La Plata County Road 501 South, runners will follow 501 for over four miles before running across the dam. On the east side of the dam, runners will follow CR 603 around the east side of Vallecito Reservoir. On the Northeast side of the reservoir, runners will rejoin 501 and remain on that road until turning left to enter the finish area, located where the race starts.

New this year, the Durango Running Club will be organizing the race.

“Rocky Mountain Races has done an incredible job launching the race over the last two years,” said race director Tim Funk. “We’re excited to take the baton and continue the tradition of the Vallecito Lake Heavy Half – a family-friendly, community-focused event nestled in the heart of the San Juans.”

The Vallecito Lake Heavy Half is a 100% volunteer-led effort. The race benefits the Vallecito Community Center, with funds going toward its scholarship program.

All runners will receive a unique finisher’s glass, a custom-printed performance long sleeve T-shirt and a post-race lunch. The post-race party is sponsored by the Rocky Mountain General Store and Meats.

Sponsors this year include Alpine Bank, Durango Running Company, Brown’s Sport Shoe, The Weminuche Woodfire Grill, Reliable Waste Service, Rocky Mountain General Store and Meats, Ska Brewing, Tailwind, Upper Pine River Fire Department and Zuberfizz.
