Durango running community set to gather for Hardrock Hundred documentary at Strater Theatre

Strater Theatre will host viewing of Hardrock Hundred documentary on Wednesday evening

This year’s state champion Durango High School cross country team and the Durango Running Company will be hosting a viewing of “Kissing the Rock” at the Henry Strater Theatre this Wednesday.

The documentary highlights Silverton’s grueling Hardrock Hundred Endurance Run, an annual July race in which runners come to the San Juan Mountains from all over the world to test themselves on some of the toughest running terrain on earth.

The race course is 100.5 miles in length and runs through Silverton, Ouray and Telluride with over 67,000 feet of elevation change for runners to traverse before crossing the finish line.

“We want to do this to celebrate the extraordinary running community we have here in Durango,” Durango High School head coach David McMillan said in a phone interview with The Durango Herald. “It is a great opportunity for all of us to connect and make an already strong community even stronger.”

Tickets to the event are $5 before April 13 and $8 at the door on Wednesday. Ticket sales will be used to benefit the nationally-ranked Durango High School cross country program. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. and the state champions will be recognized at 7 p.m. before the movie starts.

The DHS and Mancos High School cross country teams will be running to the theater together to show the solidarity of the strong, young running community in Southwest Colorado.
