Durango School District 9-R approves academic calendars

Professional days added to schedule for next two years
Next school year’s calendar includes more professional development days for teachers and a rearrangement of days off to give families a longer weekend in January.

Durango School District 9-R adopted two academic calendars last week, for the 2017-18 school year and the one after.

Three professional development days have been added to both calendars to provide faculty and staff more planning time.

Instead of two consecutive Mondays off for students in January for a professional development day and the observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the district has moved the professional development day to the Friday before the holiday to give families a four-day weekend.

District spokeswoman Julie Popp said the school board approved calendars for the next two years because the process is time-consuming and so families and staff can make plans further in advance.

The calendars note the first and last days of the school year, school holidays, the beginning and ends of grading periods and professional development days.

Each include 175 school days for students.
