Durango School District gets $521,000 security grant

Money will go toward equipment and training
Durango School District 9-R will receive more than $500,000 from a state of Colorado grant to bolster security at schools.

Durango School District 9-R will receive $521,711 in a state SAFER grant to buy communication equipment and enact staff training to integrate the equipment into existing emergency operations and plans.

The money will be available beginning in 2019, and the district plans to work immediately to get the system up and running at schools.

“This has been a longtime goal of the district to continue to enhance our channels of communications, specifically in emergency situations, so that we can increase our efficiencies and response in coordination with local responders,” said Superintendent Dan Snowberger.

The state’s School Access For Emergency Response Grant awarded $4.86 million statewide for 2019.
