The Durango varsity high school hockey team beat the Cibola Cougars 12-1 on Friday in Albuquerque to start the Rio Grand High School Hockey League’s year-end tournament.

“They were on fire,” said Durango head coach Brian Ensign. “They were exceptional moving the puck and with puck possession. They were excited, and they weren’t holding back.”

The Demons jumped out to a 4-0 lead midway through the first period and never looked back. The coach said they outshot the Cougars roughly 45-15 in the game.

“The kids started really strong and really fast,” he said.

Boden Ensign scored four goals to lead Durango. The team’s No. 1 line with Zak Wentworth, Henry Howe and Lukas Petranek also had a dominate day.

“That No. 1 line was flying and no one could keep up with them,” coach Ensign said.

With the win, Durango advances to the semifinals and will play the winner of Los Alamos and Telluride in the semifinals at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.
