Flint Gervais, Durango High School freshman and senior patrol leader for Scout Troop 538, is working to achieve the coveted Eagle Scout rank, a status which only about 8% of scouts attain.
Part of the Eagle Scout rank process requires the completion of a service project, which gives scouts the opportunity to demonstrate leadership in benefiting their community.
For his service project, Gervais sought to identify what Escalante Middle School, his alma mater, needed. With the advice of school principal Jeremy Voss, Gervais decided to help the school expand its outdoor seating areas so students could take more classes outside on warm days.
Gervais guided 29 volunteers as they built three picnic table kits, two benches, fixed old broken tables and stained it all.
Home Depot donated half the materials for the build. Fired Up Pizzeria donated 15 pizzas to feed the volunteers.
Gervais has completed all the required paperwork for the Eagle Scout rank process and is now awaiting his final board of review.
“Scout Troop 538 couldn’t be more proud of him (Gervais),” said Erin Gervais, Flint’s mother and assistant scoutmaster for Troop 538. “He is a great leader and has a very bright future ahead of him.”
