Durango skiers compete in state championships

Demons took part in giant slalom and slalom

The Durango High School alpine ski teams took center stage at the state championships in Loveland Valley last Thursday and Friday, competing in the giant slalom and slalom events.

The boys team finished third overall out of 13 teams, while the girls team finished 12th out of 17 teams.

In the women’s giant slalom, senior Annabel Carithers finished 20th with a combined time after two runs of one minute, 51.34 seconds. Junior Lauren McClellan finished 24th with a time of 1:52.54.

On the boys side, the Demons had four skiers inside the top 20 of the men’s giant slalom.

Junior Holden Bronson finished 12th with a time of 1:47.77, whilejunior Zach Oliver finished 13th with a time of 1:47.86. Senior Ian Fehr finished 14th with a time of 1:47.90, and junior Finn Scarpella finished 17th with a time of 1:48.97.

In the women’s slalom, McClellan finished 21st with a combined time of 1:54.22 and Carithers finished 28th with a 1:59.77.

Fehr had one of the more impressive performances for Durango by finishing fifth in the men’s slalom with a time of 1:35.61. Bronson finished 11th with a time of 1:40.49. Freshman Nathan Mehaffie finished 26th with a time of 1:57.90.
