Durango skiers race at Keystone

The Durango High School alpine ski team competed in its first race of the season Friday at Keystone. Racing in giant slalom, the Durango boys finished fourth out of six teams while the Demon girls placed fifth in their team race.

Holden Bronson led the DHS boys with an 11th-place finish after skiing two runs in a combined 1 minute, 34.42 seconds. Barron Bronson had the 18th-fastest first run and the 17th-fastest second run, but was able to move up in the standings and finish 15th for DHS in (1:37.53).

Corbin Horrocks was the third and final scorer for the DHS boys, placing 19th in 1:40.02.

Also racing for the Demons were Dane Englund (1:40.43, 22nd), Finn Scarpella (1:40.91, 23rd), Ian Fehr (24th, 1:41.50), Renic Vincent (1:45.55, 29th), Cole Kusar (11:47.36, 37th), Liam March (1:48.08, 39th) and Nash Vincent (1:57.35, 54th). Zach Oliver had the 17th fastest first run, but didn’t not finish his second. Jaiden Fuss also did one run and did not finish.

Stanley Buezek of Summit had the fastest first and second runs to win the race by more than two seconds in 1:27.09.

Aspen, meanwhile, had three racers finish in the top five to win the team title with 171 points, followed by Summit (162), Steamboat Springs (157), Durango (150), Evergreen (139) and Lake County (130).

In the girls competition, Lauren McClellan flew through the gates in 48.48 seconds and then was one of the only girls to get faster and clocked a 48.31 to place 14th (1:36.79).

Annabel Carithers finished 17th in 1:39.05 and Madison LeSage rounded out Durango’s team score with a 21st-place finish in 1:43.87.

Alaysia Cullum (1:44.16, 24th), Sienna Cullum (1:48.55, 34th), Isabel Mora (1:56.84, 49th), Kiiana Walden (1:57.53, 51st) and Ruby Tanaka (1:59.76, 52nd) also successfuly navigated the gates. Ann Auston and Aca McClellan both did not finish.

Led by individual winner Stalla Sherlock (1:31.03), Aspen won the girls team title with 175 points. Summit finished second with 164, followed by Evergreen (155), Steamboat (147), Durango (144) and Lake County (142).

This week, the Demons will race at Beaver Creek on Thursday.
