Durango High School fans don’t let the rainy weather get in their way while enjoying the Fruita Monument High School game on Saturday at DHS.
Elijah Feton got the Demons on the board with an early penalty-kick goal, and Durango continued its roll for a big bounce-back win.
Durango High School’s boys soccer team (7-1-1, 3-1-1 5A/4A Southwestern League) picked up a 3-1 home win Saturday afternoon to complete a season sweep of the Fruita Monument Wildcats (4-5, 1-3 SWL).
“We didn’t necessarily play our best game of the year, but we came out and figured out a way to put pressure on in the right moments,” DHS head coach Dalon Parker said. “It was another lesson for this group to learn how to handle some high pressure and find a way to win.”
DHS carried a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to Fenton’s PK goal. A handball was called in the box, giving Fenton the opportunity.
Leland Heinicke scored the team’s second goal, and Jack Beattie added a third for good measure. Max Wilson had an assist for the Demons.
Heinicke switched positions for a second time this season. Saturday, Parker moved the talented sophomore to center mid after he spent a few weeks on the defensive back line.
“Leland is amazing for us,” Parker said. “We switched him again and he really played well.”
It was a cold, wet day at the DHS stadium. It was good preparation for the Demons, who are looking ahead to the state playoffs as much as anything with six games remaining on the regular-season schedule.
“We usually don’t get this type of weather until the last league game of the year or the playoffs,” Parker said. “Getting to see this wet rainy stuff early, we keep picking up little lessons every single time we play.”
DHS will hit the road Thursday to play at Sandia Prep in Albuquerque. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
