The Durango High School softball team celebrated senior night by scoring two walk-off wins against Meeker on Friday at DHS.

With the two wins, the team set a new program record with 13 wins on the season.

“There were a lot of emotions, lots of tears, lots of laughter and a lot of happiness,” said head coach John Bernazzani.

To get the record, however, the Demons had to rally and make some clutch plays against Meeker.

The Demons fell behind Meeker 6-0 after two innings in the first game, but then slowly chipped away. DHS scored one run in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and, trailing by one, two more in the seventh to get the win.

Kelly Arthur drove in the winning run for DHS.

Tehya Barns had three hits and three RBIs. Sydney Flores also scored twice for DHS.

On the mound, Teagan Kehm relieved Flores and didn’t give up a run in 5-plus innings.

“Teagan shut them down,” Bernazzani said. “After the first game, they were pretty excited, and I said, ‘Congratulations, you just tied Durango’s program record for wins.’”

In the second game, Flores pitched again for DHS and held Meeker to just one run until the seventh inning.

Durango, meanwhile, scored three runs up to that point and was only three outs away from a second win, but Meeker rallied to tie the game. With runners on second and third, however, Flores buttoned down and got out of inning with the score tied.

“They came off the field and decided if they could do it in the first game, they could do it again,” Bernazzani said.

In the bottom of the seventh, Arthur reached base and Kremer brought her home for the team’s second walk-off win of the day.

“Alaysia hit a solid line drive to bring her home,” Bernazzani said. Kremer also scored twice in the game. Mia Baguskas scored once, while Kehm and Flores both knocked in runs for DHS.

The team’s eight seniors all started the second game and played a few innings. “They all contributed,” the coach said, calling it a “storybook day.”

DHS improved to 13-5 overall with the two wins. Meeker slid to 8-9 overall with the losses.

The Demons will have another test Saturday when they travel to Grand Junction (17-4, 6-0) to play the No. 8 ranked 5A Tigers in a Southwestern League doubleheader.
