Durango stabbing victim remains in hospital

Police waiting to interview man; no arrests made in April 1 incident

A Durango man stabbed earlier this month near College Plaza Laundry is still recovering in a hospital on the Front Range, and his condition has kept local police from getting a detailed statement from the 30-year-old, law enforcement said.

No arrests have been made related to the April 1 incident, in which a Durango man stabbed an acquaintance with a 6-inch blade near his left armpit, said Durango Police Cmdr. Rita Warfield.

Warfield declined to name the individuals involved in the stabbing, citing an active investigation.

“We’re just waiting for the opportunity to get a detailed statement from him,” Warfield said. “He’s still in the hospital, so I’m assuming he’s getting better.”

The incident started with a fistfight on a sidewalk near a laundromat in the 500 block of East Eight Avenue, a College Plaza Laundry employee said. Law enforcement questioned the 31-year-old suspect and witnesses to the incident but have yet to get the full story.

The victim was transported to Mercy Regional Medical Center and was soon transfered to a hospital on the Front Range for more intensive care, Warfield said.

“We haven’t had a chance to talk to him, so we don’t really know his status, only that he’s not able to give us any kind of an interview yet,” Warfield said.
