Durango swept by Cherry Creek and Battle Mountain

Demons’ girls lacrosse loses a difficult doubleheader in the Front Range

Turns out, Cherry Creek was as good as the Durango High School girls lacrosse team thought it would be.

So, it wasn’t a very good day to play a doubleheader.

“We didn’t have anything left in the tank after playing Cherry Creek in the morning,” DHS head coach Jenni Darlow said.

Cherry Creek beat Durango (3-5) 17-6, then after the bus ride from Greenwood Village to Edwards, Battle Mountain beat Durango 18-7 – a pair of 11-goal losses that Darlow would love to put an asterisk on.

“We matched up pretty well with (Cherry Creek), except we really, really, really struggled with transition defense,” Darlow said. “They really killed us on transition defense.”

Game 2 simply was a matter of legs.

“Absolutely,” Darlow said. “Early on, it didn’t look like we were playing; we just didn’t have the legs, and if you don’t have the legs, then you can’t catch the ball, you can’t make good passes, you can’t make good decisions.

“That first game took so much out of us.”

Jesse Ransford, who scored four goals in her return to the lineup Friday, a 17-4 win at Overland, again led the Demons with two goals and an assist against Cherry Creek and a hat trick against Battle Mountain.

Alyssa Montoya scored two goals in Game 1 and two goals in Game 2.

Sophia Quick scored a goal in each game, and Sarah Martin and Abi Moore also scored goals Saturday.

DHS freshman Cheyenne Coffey, forced into duty because of starting goaltender McKenna Rigdon’s illness, made nine saves in each game.

“There was no quit,” Darlow said. “It wasn’t for a lack of effort, just a lack of execution. We left it all on the field; we were just exhausted.”
