Turns out, Cherry Creek was as good as the Durango High School girls lacrosse team thought it would be.
So, it wasnt a very good day to play a doubleheader.
We didnt have anything left in the tank after playing Cherry Creek in the morning, DHS head coach Jenni Darlow said.
Cherry Creek beat Durango (3-5) 17-6, then after the bus ride from Greenwood Village to Edwards, Battle Mountain beat Durango 18-7 a pair of 11-goal losses that Darlow would love to put an asterisk on.
We matched up pretty well with (Cherry Creek), except we really, really, really struggled with transition defense, Darlow said. They really killed us on transition defense.
Game 2 simply was a matter of legs.
Absolutely, Darlow said. Early on, it didnt look like we were playing; we just didnt have the legs, and if you dont have the legs, then you cant catch the ball, you cant make good passes, you cant make good decisions.
That first game took so much out of us.
Jesse Ransford, who scored four goals in her return to the lineup Friday, a 17-4 win at Overland, again led the Demons with two goals and an assist against Cherry Creek and a hat trick against Battle Mountain.
Alyssa Montoya scored two goals in Game 1 and two goals in Game 2.
Sophia Quick scored a goal in each game, and Sarah Martin and Abi Moore also scored goals Saturday.
DHS freshman Cheyenne Coffey, forced into duty because of starting goaltender McKenna Rigdons illness, made nine saves in each game.
There was no quit, Darlow said. It wasnt for a lack of effort, just a lack of execution. We left it all on the field; we were just exhausted.
