The Durango Swim Club hosted a home meet last weekend and blew its opponents out of the water.
The team racked up 844 points Saturday and Sunday at the Durango Recreation Center and cruised to victory with almost twice as many points as the second-place Cortez Leopard Sharks’ 429. Mesa Verde Athletic Club finished third with 398 points.
Each of the team’s 33 participants scored points for the home team at the Durango Summer Invite. Agatha Dos, 4, scored 16 points for the Durango squad with a winning time of 47.29 seconds in the 6-and-under 25-meter backstroke. Mckenzie Oury, 5, scored 13 points with a first-place swim in the 6-and-under 25-meter freestyle with a time of 39.73. Heidi Clay, 10, finished eighth in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 2 minutes, 28.97 seconds.
Raina Dixon, 7, earned 37 points for the team with a 200-meter freestyle time of 4:43.50. Brothers Ayden and Charlie Guion combined to score 11 points for the team, as 11-year-old Ayden posted five and Charlie picked up six in the 8-and-under 25-meter freestyle race.
“Our team is very tight-knit,” 16-year-old Animas High School student Haley Benjamin said in a news release. “Our coach made (the seniors) take Sunday off for a recovery day because we have a championship meet on Thursday. We all still showed up to volunteer and cheer our other teammates on. It’s a fun team, and I love that we get to watch these younger kids develop and be their role models.”
The swim club will take 11 members to the four-day championship meet Thursday through Sunday in Grand Junction. The Durango Swim Club members who won’t make the trip to the championship meet will compete at the Telluride Open.
