The Durango Swim Club battled back and forth with Farmington but came up a little short last weekend at the Cortez Great Pumkin Invite.

DSC sent 30 swimmers to the two-day meet and trailed Farmington by 34 points after Saturday. The team made a push on Sunday but couldn’t overcome the deficit and lost by 23 points to its southern counterpart.

Farmington scored 691 points at the meet, Durango had 668 and Telluride finished a distant third with 333 points.

“It was a pretty good meet,” DSC head coach Alex Martinek said in an email to The Durango Herald. “I was really hoping we could have won, but it just didn’t happen this year. Every swimmer on our team at the meet scored points and that’s really cool to see. Our youngest on the team right now is 4 and she won both of the events she swam.”

The DSC girls were a dominant force during the weekend. In the 13-and-over age group, Durango finished first, second, third and fourth in the 200-meter individual medley, 200 freestyle, 400 individual medley and the 500 freestyle races. They also won the 200 freestyle and 200 medley relays.

Leading the girls were Haley Benjamin, Torey Duran, Angela McManus, McKenzie Rion, Quinn Schmidt and Mina Willemin.

Martinek said the younger swimmers on the team had impressive showings, too.

In the 11-12-year-old division, Maren Clay finished second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 44.06 seconds, which was a personal best by four seconds. Emma Hohan finished fourth in the race, her first time racing in the event, in 3:20.32.

Brinely Duran, the youngest swimmer on the team at 4 years old, won both of her events – the 25 freestyle and 25 backstroke – for the 6-and-under division.

DSC will be back in the pool Friday and Saturday for the Montrose Marlin Fall Open in Montrose.
