The Durango Swim Club brought 12 swimmers to the 14-and-under Bronze Circuit meet in Grand Junction Saturday, and the local swimmers won nearly half of the events.

Durango was the fastest team in 17 of the 36 events. According to head coach Alex Martinez, there were a number of notable swims. Merin Schmidt’s time of 2 minutes, 55.62 seconds was the best in the ages 9 to 10 200-yard freestyle and Jayden Craig (2:57.31) was right behind in second place.

Schmidt’s 1:43.89 time was also good enough to win the 100-yard individual medley. Lauren McCourt came in second place with a time of 1:48.11.

McKenzie Rion took first in the same event in the 13-14 age group. Rion won by a whopping 4-second gap.

Ali Reese won the boys 9 to 10 group’s 200-yard freestyle with a time of 3:15.89. In his first-ever 200, Charlie Fosco finished fifth.

Eight-year-old Aileen McManus took on much older competitors in the 500-yard freestyle and finished just shy of 10 minutes. Older sister Angela McManus, 13, finished second in the race with a time of 6:15.14. Alex Burns, 10, had a mark of 8:00.56 in the same event.

“The team had an excellent meet,” Alex Martinek wrote in an email to The Durango Herald. “The younger kids are developing and finding their technique. It’s really starting to show in their races and in practice.”
