Durango swimmers place in High Desert

Swim Club to host Silent Auction

A group of six Durango Swim Club swimmers competed in the ninth annual High Desert Classic, and turned in impressive performances at the pool at the Albuquerque Academy from November 21-23.

“I was really impressed with the outcome of the swims over the weekend and the camaraderie of the group,” Durango Swim Club head coach Suzanne Johnson said in an email to The Durango Herald. “Everyone was cheering for each other and having a great time.”

Over 400 swimmers were in attendance in Albuquerque to compete. Durango swimmer, Maggie Holcomb, 10, turned in impressive performances as she placed second in the 200-yard Freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 25 seconds, fifth in the 100 Freestyle and seventh in the 100 Backstroke.

“Maggie was ready for this meet, it was an outstanding swim,” said Johnson.

Haley Benjamin, 15, placed well overall with as she came in second in the 200 Butterfly, second in the 500 Freestyle, fifth in the 200 Individual Medley, and sixth in both the 100 Butterfly and 200 Freestyle.

Quinn Schmidt, 13, placed ninth in the 500 Freestyle with a best time of 5:58. Schmidt also placed 19th in the 200 Freestyle and 13th in the 50 Backstroke.

Mira Joyner, 15, finished 12th in the 100 Breaststroke and 14th in the 100 Backstroke.

Iain McCourt, 15, had a 15th place finish in the 500 Freestyle and a personal record in the 200 Freestyle.

Joci Earl, 15, placed 14th in the 500 Freestyle and had a personal record in the 100 Backstroke and the 200 Backstroke.

The Durango Swim Club will be running a Silent Auction from 6 p.m.-9 p.m. on Dec. 4 at El Rancho Tavern for Noel Night. It is open to the public and everyone is encouraged to join the DSC.
