The win improved DHS’ record to 14-7 overall heading into Saturday’s regular season finale against Montrose. The Demons will host MHS (11-11) at noon at Fort Lewis College.
The Durango boys, meanwhile, beat Alamosa 59-49 to score their fourth straight win and get to .500 at 11-11.
Anthony Flint scored 25 points to lead DHS, and Walter Stauffer added 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Demons will now look to give Montrose (22-0) its first loss of the season on Saturday after the girls’ game.
The Fort Lewis men’s and women’s basketball teams were also in Alamosa on Friday taking on Adams State University.
The men were out for revenge after dropping the first game against Adams and took a 47-31 lead into halftime.
The Grizzlies weren’t about to go down without a fight, however, and tied the game at 66-66 with a 3-pointer with 8:15 remaining and then took the lead with another field goal.
The Skyhwaks, however, got back-to-back three pointers from Akuel Kot and Dunnell Stafford to pull back ahead, 76-71, and then finished strong to win the game, 96-89.
Kot scored 25 points to lead FLC. Riley Farris scored 23 while Brenden Boatwright and Dunnell Stafford both scored 14.
The FLC women fell in the final moments, losing 58-56.
Piper Terry picked up a clutch steal with 1:46 on the clock, leading to a huge three from Alyssa Adams to give the Skyhawks a 56-54 advantage. The Grizzlies countered with a pair of free throws to tie the score at 56-56. In the ensuing possession, Adams State came away with an offensive rebound and was fouled in the process. The Grizzlies hit both free throws, which ended up making the difference.
Redshirt senior Sydney Candelaria led the team with 25 points, going 8-8 from the charity stripe. Redshirt sophomore Kelsey Sorenson followed with a double-double, chipping in 10 points and 12 rebounds.
