Durango High School’s boys soccer team, boys tennis team and boys and girls cross country teams all got their seasons underway on Friday with their first competitions. All of them had success.

The boys soccer team started its season Friday against Battle Mountain, a team that was ranked No. 1 almost all of last year. Battle Mountain scored the first two goals in the contest, but Durango rallied back and scored the next three goals to win the game, 3-2.

On Saturday, the soccer team kept that momentum rolling and beat Glenwood Springs handily, 7-1.

The boys tennis team competed in a tournament in Grand Junction.

On Friday, the team beat Grand Junction Central, 5-2, and then beat Smoky Hill, 4-3. The Demons fell to Regis Jesuit, 7-0, but Regis, who took a plane to the tournament, beat everyone they played by the same score. On Saturday, the coach said the team was beating Steamboat Springs 5-2, but the match got rained out before they could finish and ended in a draw.

“It was such a great start to the season,” said head tennis coach Todd Jolley.

Durango’s cross country teams began their season Friday at the Boggy Draw Bear Chase in Dolores. Head coach Ken Flint said it was mainly the team’s junior varsity runners who competed, but Durango’s girls still ran away with the team title while its boys placed third. Freshman Dewa Llg won the girls’ race for Durango in 21 minutes and 44 seconds.

The Durango softball team also played a doubleheader Saturday against Montrose. Montrose won the first game, 8-6, but Durango came out fired up in the second game, scored six runs in the first inning and never looked back. DHS went on to win the game, 13-6.
