The Durango High School girls tennis team began its season Saturday with a pair of matches, against Montrose and Vail Mountain.
The Demons beat Montrose 7-0 to start the day, but fell to Vail Mountain 5-2 in its second match.
Against Montrose, freshman Sophia Gallagher won her debut at No. 1 singles 6-4, 6-3.
Ellie Davenport won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, and Ellie McLean scored a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.
Durango also dominated the doubles matches against Montrose.
Sydney Pritchard and Adwyn Chowen won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles, and Lola Bradshaw and Juliet DiGiacomo won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2.
Addie Cady and Litzy Lopez won their match at No. 3 doubles 6-0, 6-2. And Avery Edgar and Rachel Ager won at No. 4 doubles 6-0, 6-1 to complete the shutout.
Against Vail Mountain, three matches went into a third-set tiebreaker, but Vail won two to take the match 5-2.
After losing the first set to Catherine Dawsey 6-4, Gallagher rallied to win the second set 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Dawsey, however, won the third set 10-5 for the victory.
At No. 2 singles, Davenport rallied to win the second set 7-5 after dropping the first set 6-2 against Summer Sveum. In the third set, Davenport kept the momentum rolling and won it 10-6 for the victory.
The No. 4 doubles match also went into a third set after Edgar and Ager responded from a 6-4 loss in the first set with a 6-3 win in the second set. Vail, however, took the third set, 12-10.
Chowen and Bradshaw picked up a win for Durango at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 7-5.
McLean fell 6-2, 6-4 at No. 3 singles to Gracie Allen.
Pritchard and DiGiacomo fell 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles.
At No. 3 doubles, Cady and Lopez came up short, 6-3, 6-1.
The team will be back on the court Thursday against Steamboat Springs in neutral Grand Junction.
