On April 22,1970, the EPA proclaimed the first Earth Day. What started as a day to celebrate the planet’s natural resources has in recent years become a day to highlight the need for action and attention to the current global climate crisis.
To commemorate Earth Day 2022, Indivisible Durango is hosting a parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday on Main Avenue. All are invited to join.
Participants will gather at 10:10 a.m. in the 500 block of Main Avenue, in front of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Train Station. The theme of the parade is Climate Solutions. Participants are encouraged to dress up as their favorite climate solution and bring signs.
The march up Main will begin at 10:30 a.m. and will end at Rotary Park where the annual 4Core-sponsored Earth Day festivities will take place. In addition to local speakers, events will include live music courtesy of the Pete Giuliani Band, kids’ activities, food, an electric vehicle test drive and viewing of the new EV school bus, as well as a performance by the Southern Ute Bear Dancers, and vendor booths from local environmental organizations. The awareness-raising event is free and family friendly.
