Durango to temporarily reduce speed limit along downtown bump-outs

The city of Durango temporarily reduced the speed limit downtown to 15 mph to enhance the safety of the bump-outs.

City staff members began installing signs Friday to alert drivers. The reduced speed limit will be in effect until Oct. 31, when the bump-outs are set to be removed. The speed limit on East Second Avenue will not change.

The bump-outs were installed downtown in 2020 and returned this year on March 15. The program is intended to support economic recovery while reducing the spread of COVID-19.

The city has also taken steps to slow traffic and create awareness of bump-outs by restriping Main Avenue into one lane for traffic in each direction, along with a center turn lane. Parking is free downtown on weeknights after 6 p.m. and all day Saturday and Sunday.
