For the month of October, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, which was given the 2016 Sunset Travel Award for Best Train Experience, will run a lavender boxcar to honor and support individuals who are dealing with cancer. The railroad beat out three California trains in the reader-voting contest, the Napa Valley Wine Train, the Farm-to-Fork Cocktail Train in Sacramento and the Reno Fun Train & Sierra Scenic Train in the Bay Area.

For the month of October, the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad will run a lavender boxcar to honor and support Individuals affected by cancer. The repainted boxcar is No. 6634, which has been on the tracks for more than a century.

As the winner of the
Lavender is the official color recognizing all cancers, including those that may not have a dedicated shade, such as pink for breast cancer or teal for cervical cancer.
In addition to running the boxcar throughout October, the railroad will encourage guests to donate to cancer nonprofits such as the American Cancer Society and to become informed about cancer and recent research.
“It’s our sincere hope this effort, in October and beyond, will lead to a greater understanding of cancer and its effects,” said Al Harper, owner of the Durango & Silverton, “and help contribute to the achievement of the ultimate goal here: discovering a cure once and for all.”
