The Durango High School volleyball team and Pagosa Springs went the full distance and then some Thursday in both teams’ season openers.

Unfortunately for Durango, Pagosa escaped in the fifth set with an 18-16 win to score the victory, 3-2.

The Pirates won the first game, 25-16.

Durango then rallied back to take the second game, 25-13, and tie the contest.

Pagosa went back up 2-1 by taking the third set, 25-19.

The Demons, however, kept the contest alive by scoring a lop-sided victory in the fifth set, 25-12.

In the fifth set, the first team to get 15 points usually wins, but since a team needs to win by two, 15 wasn’t enough on Thursday.

Pagosa, however, eventually pulled ahead by two to win the set, 18-16, and the season opener in its home court.

Durango will next play its home opener on Tuesday when the Demons host Farmington. The varsity contest is tentatively scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
