Impressive play against a rival gave the Durango High School volleyball team a senior night to remember.

The Demons had no problem working past Montezuma-Cortez in straight sets at home, winning 25-15, 25-19 and 25-18.

“It was really nice,” DHS head coach Colleen Vogt said. “They play well, and I think we’re peaking and playing good volleyball.”

A rotation loaded with seven seniors – Ellie Gervais, Lia Henriksen, Lauran Morrissey, Maddie Robertson, Leah Stephens, Addison Swift and Sarah Waller – controlled the match early, allowing underclassmen to get in the mix on senior night.

Swift led the squad with 23 assists, and Henrisken was close to a double-double with 10 kills and seven blocks.

Stephens added nine digs, and junior Ivy Kirwan had another eight digs.

DHS made it two wins in a row to end the Class 4A/5A Southwestern League schedule with a 5-5 record to finish in the middle of the six-team league.

But the regular season is far from over for the Demons, as they will travel to Parker this weekend for the Ponderosa Mustang Classic. The Demons will face several of the top teams in the state, including host Ponderosa at 6:30 p.m. Friday. With the regular season coming to a close this weekend, it is a big stage for the Demons (11-8) to prove they deserve a spot in the postseason.

“It will be nice to play some good 4A competition now that we’re done with league,” Vogt said. “We always seem to play better the better teams we play.”
