The Durango High School girls golf team competed in Montrose on Wednesday and Thursday and returned with two team titles and two individual crowns.

Senior Natasha Walcott shot a personal best 76 on Wednesday to win the Montrose High School Invite at the Black Canyon Golf Course.

“That was probably the best scoring round I’ve ever had an athlete have,” said DHS head coach Kirk Rawles.

Senior Zayda Mestas finished second, two strokes behind Walcott, at Black Canyon. Mestas then carded her second straight round of 78 on Thursday to win Montrose’s tournament at the Cobble Creek Golf Club.

“That was her fourth round this year in the 70s, I’ve never had a player do that,” Rawles said. He also said he had never had two golfers card 70s in the same round before Wednesday.

With the two 70s and sophomore Ellie White carding a fifth-place 87, the Demons possibly posted the lowest team score in school history, a 241, to win the team title at Black Canyon. Rawles said that was the best team score in his 14 years coaching and his predecessor couldn’t recount a better score for DHS ever.

“It was great to see it all come together in one day,” Rawles said.

Walcott’s winning round started with a two-stroke penalty when her first drive went out of bounds. On the next 16 holes, however, she made five birdies while posting even-par on the back nine.

“Mentally she said, ‘I’m going to go for birdies,’” Rawles said. “I really like that mindset for her.”

Mestas also performed better as she got used to Black Canyon’s slow greens. After finishing her first nine 7-over, Mestas shot a 1-under on her second nine to finish second.

White shot a 41 on the back nine to finish with an 87.

“As a team, we were 4-over on the back nine,” Rawles said. “That’s really incredible for a girls golf team.”

Freshman Jayden Craig shot a 95 to finish eighth while sophomore Raimee Brant placed 15th with a 97.

At Cobble Creek, White had her best round as a DHS golfer, an 84, to finish third.

“That was another breakthrough,” Rawles said. “If she cleans up a few things, she’ll be in the same place as Zayda and Natasha are now.”

Senior Claire Paul also finished with one of her best rounds, sinking six pars to place ninth with a 92.

“That was really solid for her,” Rawles said.

Craig shot a 94 and placed 11th. “She’s putting some good stretches together as a freshman and getting some good mileage,” Rawles said.

Mestas, meanwhile, put together another consistent round after missing some early putts to win the tournament.

“Once she got going, she played great,” Rawles said. “The sound of the ball coming off her club was impressive.”

The Demons won the team title at Black Canyon by 29 strokes with their 241. Montrose finished second with a 270, followed by Fruita Monument (289), Palisade (290), Rifle (293) Montezuma-Cortez (294), Glenwood Springs (308), Gunnison (324), Palisade 2 (332), Grand Junction Central (332) and Montrose 2 (360).

The Demons then won Cobble Creek by 31 strokes with a 248 team score. Montrose finished second with a 279, followed by Montezuma-Cortez (280), Palisade (288), Fruita (297), Rifle (299), Montrose 2 (316) and Gunnison (334).

Chesnie Patrick led M-CHS at Black Canyon with a fourth-place 85 and then shot a 90 at Cobble Creek to finish seventh. Amita Crowley led the Panthers at Cobble Creek with a sixth-place 89.

DHS, the No. 8 ranked team in Class 4A, will compete in its regional tournament May 22 at the Bookcliff Country Club in Grand Junction. The team’s biggest competition will be No. 3 Mullen and No. 4 Loveland. The top two teams, and next 13 individuals, will advance to the state championships.

“I’m really excited to have such a strong team,” Rawles said. “I’m feeling optimistic going into regionals.”
