Police are investigating a stabbing that occurred earlier this week near the Animas River behind north City Market.
A witness said Keesha McCoy, 38, and Ashleigh Noland, 29, both of Durango, were hanging out by the river and appeared to be getting along when Noland stood up and stabbed McCoy in the neck with a knife, apparently unprovoked, said detective Sgt. Deck Shaline, with the Durango Police Department.
McCoy suffered a ¾-inch gash to the side of her neck, he said.
“It’ was a significant laceration, but it was insignificant in the sense that it didn’t hit anything vital,” Shaline said.
McCoy has been released from Mercy Regional Medical Center.
The stabbing was reported at 5:12 p.m. Monday.
Noland has been arrested on suspicion of felony assault. She was being held Wednesday in the La Plata County Jail on $25,000 bail.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen the women hanging out together is asked to call Shaline at 375-4729.
