As they’ve done most of the season, the Durango High School boys and girls cross country teams made plenty of noise at the Class 4A Region 6 meet in Delta, setting the tone for next weekend’s state meet.
The boys team advanced to state with a regional championship, winning by 17 points over Eagle Valley, while the girls team advanced by finishing second by 27 points behind Battle Mountain. The top four teams and top 15 individuals advanced.
Hannah Peterson’s fifth-place run and Gordon Gianniny’s seventh-place finish paced the Demons.
Gianinny finished in 16 minutes, 34.6 seconds, and teammate Nicholas Turco was right behind in eighth in 16:39.
Alastair McMillan was 10th in 16:41.9, Joe Crawford 13th in 16:52.5, Sean McLaughlin 16th in 16:58.2, Benjamin Lachelt 17th in 16:59.6, Trent Andrews 20th in 17:05.5, Seamus Millett 25th in 17:27.4 and Jacob Branch 26th in 17.30.1.
Peterson led the girls in 19:01.1, and teammate Shannon Maloney finished right behind in sixth in 19:11.8.
Sarah Bates was next in 15th in 19:55.9. Marley Weaver-Gabel was 17th in 20:14.2, Emily Edwards-Colsman 18th in 20:18.5, Emily Schaldach 28th in 20:40.2, Katarina Seibert 39th in 21:05.2, Maggie Wigton 41st in 21:07.7 and Emily Fogel 44th in 21:19.4.
Summit’s Liam Meirow won the boys race in 15:29.6, and Greta Van Calcar of Palisade was the girls champion in 17:43.9.
The CHSAA Class 4A Boys and Girls Cross Country State Championships will take place Oct. 26 at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs. The 4A boys race will begin at 10:30 a.m., with the girls to follow at 12:30 p.m.
