Teams from the Durango Youth Football league picked up several wins over the weekend.
Every player contributed in the second grade team’s loss to the Farmington Beast. Colin Price scored the team’s lone touchdown. On the defensive line, Rowan Matava, Clark McKay, Kawika Walker, Vincent Westlund and Kaycen Hadden gave the Farmington Beast a tough battle and got some big hits in the backfield.
The third grade team improved to 5-0 by defeating Cortez 39-0. The team’s running game was strong, and Sawyer Sigle, Carter Lopez and Tobias Romero rushed for touchdowns. The passing game also was on point. Jameson Green caught a touchdown pass, and Jack Wiman made an extra point reception.
The defense kept Cortez out of the end zone and contributed to the score with a pick-six from Braxton Ernst.
The fourth grade team had a big win over Kirtland, 13-0. Daniel Johnson, Ely Pinto and Tommy Munn had impressive sacks, and the entire defense held tough. Marcelo Escobar also did a great job helping to shut out Kirtland.
The team’s offensive line enabled Colt Winn and Levi Schwettman to rush into the end zone.
The Durango fifth graders grade beat the Farmington Thunder 12-0. Brekan Romero had two interceptions and scored a touchdown. Keyon Alston scored the team’s other touchdown. Key defenders included Dax Kunch, Cole Perkins and Romero, who helped keep Farmington from scoring.
The sixth grade squad improved to 5-0 with a 29-6 win over Aztec. Hayes Fancher rushed for touchdowns. Rylan Ernst completed two touchdowns through the air to Malique Rodriguez. Ernst and Jerad Lopez also contributed to the point count. Jerren Miller-King, Griffin McCroskey and Ethan Palmer combined to get a safety as the defense dominated and capitalized on turnovers. Fancher and Rodriguez intercepted passes while Joe O'Brien recovered a fumble.
