Hockey season is in full swing for the Durango Youth Hockey Association. Several teams played some preseason games, and they are now competing in the regular season.
Durango’s 10U A-team traveled to Gunnison for the Drop the Puck Tournament and brought home a first-place trophy. The team beat West Elk, 5-1, Foothills, 5-4, and West Elk again, 5-2, to reach the championship. The team squared off again with Foothills in the championship, but regulation ended with the teams tied 4-4, sending the contest into overtime. After a scoreless overtime, a shootout decided a winner. Goalie Walker Green stopped three of the four shots he faced in the shootout, while Parker Brown, Breyson Bickert and Carter Lopez scored for Durango.
The 19U girls high school team played their only home games of the season this past weekend. They lost two games to the New Mexico Mustangs, tied one with West Elk and also scored a 9-1 win over West Elk. Madeline Glotfelty assisted three goals in one game to finish with a playmaker. Fiona Chandler was in the net and made 97 saves over the weekend. Sophie Shedppard, Glotfelty, Isabel Johnson, Julia Glotfelty, Molly Stanifer, Erin Jones, Parker Goldbricht and Shelby Zuber all scored goals.
The 14U team traveled to Grand Junction and went 4-0 for the weekend, outscoring their opponents 40-6. Goalie Bryson Quimby had a total of 20 saves. Brenden Johnson earned a hat trick and a playmaker. Gavin Zuber also had a hat trick while Wynn Daniels, Mikael Hofman, Dylan Morrissey, Connor Jones, Sawyer Jones and Finnegan Stanifer scored.
The 12U B team went 0-2-2 in Gunnison. Players shared goalie duties: Landon Quimby made 43 saves, Jack Womack had 19, and Shea Morrisey had 10. Ian Fowler earned a hat trick while Ruben Mullen, Pollard Addis, Morrissey and Keelyn Reynolds added goals.
The 10U B team had a rough start to its season, starting out 0-4. They learned what they need to work on and hope to have a better set of games next time.
