Youth wrestling teams from Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Arizona all came to Durango High School on Saturday to compete in the Durango Youth Wrestling Tournament.
Boys and girls from ages 4-14 competed on Saturday as eight mats were out so there was nonstop action.
The Durango Youth Wrestling Club had six different champions. Jace Brevik, Otto Paxton, Dean Simpson, Arinoz Anene, Landon Malone and Owen Megoran all won on Saturday.
“I think we did pretty good,” Durango youth wrestling coach Kenny Schwettman said. “You have such a diverse level of skills in the program and a diverse age range that all the kids they are progressing well on the year. We have from beginner to expert in their age groups. So we did pretty good. I was pretty happy with it.”
Schwettman said it was the largest Durango Youth Wrestling Tournament in recent memory, with 484 kids participating.
He also said that it’s been great to see how girl’s wrestling has grown. It has grown enough that there were 25 girls brackets instead of girls having to wrestle against boys.
The Durango Youth Wrestling Club has a few more tournaments scheduled including tournaments in Farmington, Dolores and Piedra Vista. Then, there’s a big tournament in Farmington called the Warrior which brings a lot of kids from the Albuquerque and Phoenix area.
