Durangoan nearly qualifies for wake surfing worlds

Durangoan Shannon Soignier, right, enjoys the podium after placing second in the masters division (over 40) last weekend at the Supreme Wake Surf Championships in Parker, Arizona.

Shannon Soignier of Durango placed second in her division Saturday during the Supreme Wake Surf Championships in Parker, Arizona. She just missed qualifying for the sport’s world championships.

Soignier, a local attorney, had two clean runs and was “one trick away” from winning the masters (over 40) division and qualifying for the World Wake Surfing Championships on Sept. 24-27, said her husband, Amos Soignier. The world event also will be held in Parker, at the Blue Water Resort and Casino.

In wake surfing, a surfer trails behind a wakeboard boat, doing tricks in the boat’s wake. The surfer is not connected to the boat. The wake from the boat mimics the look and feel of an ocean wave. Many of the moves are not unlike skateboarding or snowboarding.

“It’s the closest thing we can get to an ocean surf wave without having to drive to San Diego,” said Amos Soignier, who also is a Durango attorney.

He said they were introduced to the sport about five years ago and have been doing it at Navajo Reservoir during the summer. They took last year off, so Shannon Soignier went to the Parker event “cold,” Amos Soignier said.

“It was something we did more for fun,” he said. “It worked out really well.”

The Parker event was one of a series of events in the World Series of Wake Surfing. The series was created in 2012 as the worldwide feeder system for any wake surfer to earn a position in the coveted World Championship event, according to the series website.

Parker is on the Colorado River south of Lake Havasu, Arizona.

Amos Soignier said there’s another event in May in Arizona that they’re considering attending to give Shannon Soignier another chance of qualifying for worlds, but they haven’t made definite plans yet.
