Durango’s annual Zombie March ‘went very smoothly,’ police say

A man wearing a “screamer” mask took part in the Zombie March in 2013. This year’s march was, according to police, uneventful.

The Zombie March, an annual Halloween tradition on Main Avenue in Durango, was largely uneventful this year from a law enforcement perspective, according to the Durango Police Department.

As is customary, Halloween revelers took to the streets around midnight Wednesday and marched up and down the street for 35 to 40 minutes before police politely asked them to return to the sidewalk, said Cmdr. Ray Shupe, with the police department.

“Everybody was compliant, and we didn’t have any issues,” Shupe said. “It went very smoothly from our end.”

A “serious assault” occurred during the event, which police were investigating Wednesday, he said.

“We’ve got suspect information on that, and officers are working that case right now,” Shupe said Wednesday afternoon. “The victim knew the suspect in the assault, so it wasn’t anything random. It happened while they were doing their march.”

No car, businesses or other property was damaged.

“Officers did a pretty good job of keeping vehicles from trying to drive down into the mess that was going on,” Shupe said. “We did a lot of stopping of traffic trying to get onto Main Avenue and turning them around.”
