Durango’s Casey Dunlap putting on a home-run clinic

DHS senior has 4 HRs in last two games

Nobody in the state is swinging a better bat than Durango’s Casey Dunlap.

The Durango High School senior shortstop has hit four home runs and is 7-for-7 at the plate with six runs batted in his last two games. After hitting two solo home runs Tuesday in a loss to Palisade, Dunlap belted another solo homer in the bottom of the first inning Friday in a 10-4 loss to Montrose. He followed with a two-run blast in the bottom of the third, smashing a 1-0 fastball the opposite way to one of the deepest parts of Walden Memorial Field, over the right-center field fence at 400 feet.

Dunlap was 4-for-4 at the plate Friday with a double and a single to go with his two deep shots. All four at-bats came against Montrose senior pitcher Kyle Freeburg.

“I’m seeing the ball pretty well,” said a modest Dunlap, son of Aaron and Julie Dunlap. “He threw me mostly fastballs, and I was able to jump on that. Then he’d throw me curveballs; I was able to sit on it and put it in play, so it worked out.”

Against Palisade, Dunlap was 3-for-3 with two homers against another strong pitcher in Easton Woods. DHS also lost that game, 9-5.

All four of Dunlap’s homers have been no-doubters as soon as they left the bat, and DHS head coach Eric Baker said he thinks two of the singles Dunlap has hit the last two games have been hit even harder.

“He doesn’t look like he’s getting fooled much, I’ll tell you that,” Baker said. “I haven’t seen a guy that locked in in, boy, it’s been a long time.

“The ball must be as big as my head coming in there, because he is crushing everything right now.”

In 11 games this season, Dunlap is hitting .555 in 39 plate appearances. He now has five home runs and four doubles to go with 16 RBIs and 12 runs scored.

He’s giving the student-fans in the stands something to talk about during the team’s four-game losing streak.

“It’s always good to hit the ball hard and be able to get on base,” he said. “Just seeing the ball really well. Things are going my way.”
