The city of Durango plans to launch fireworks Nov. 11, Veterans Day, that were held over from this summer’s Fourth of July display, which was called off for severe fire danger.
The fireworks are expected to be launched at dusk, about 6:30 p.m., from the usual spot near Greenmount Cemetery, said Scot Davis, spokesman for the Durango Fire Protection District.
The city plans a community event leading up to the show, perhaps in Schneider Park or the Transit Center parking lot, said Mike Kelly, community events supervisor for the city. Details will be finalized this month, he said.
This summer’s Fourth of July fireworks were postponed because of existing fire danger, including the Lightner Creek Fire, which burned 412 acres a couple of miles west of city limits.
City officials considered several options for rescheduling the display, including New Year’s Eve and during Snowdown in early February, but they ultimately decided on Veterans Day because it is also a patriotic holiday and it is a good time of year – not too cold or snowy, Davis said.
“It’s early enough ... that we shouldn’t be limited by a bunch of snow and moisture,” he said. “It’s a nice opportunity for folks to get out on a Saturday in November.”
