Weeks after joining the Denver Broncos staff as an assistant offensive line coach, Durango’s John Benton may be on the move elsewhere.
According to 9News, Benton was granted permission to interview with the San Francisco 49ers for the offensive line coach position. Kyle Shanahan, son of former Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan, was introduced as the team’s head coach following the Super Bowl. Former Broncos safety John Lynch is the new general manager for the 49ers.
9News reporter Mike Klis indicated Benton’s departure is expected to move quickly. It will be his fifth NFL stop, not including the month he spent in Denver.
Benton worked with Shanahan on Gary Kubiak’s staff in Houston from 2006-10.
Benton most recently served as an assistant offensive line coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars last season. He also spent time as the offensive line coach of the Miami Dolphins after his stint in Houston.
The 1982 graduate of Durango High School spent 17 years coaching the offensive line at Colorado State. After his playing days at DHS, Benton played for the Rams and was a four-year letterman and earned two All-Western Athletic Conference honorable mention honors. In 1992, Benton also was named to CSU’s All-Century team.
