Durango’s No. 3 girls tennis doubles team drops quarterfinal matchup to Cheyenne Mountain

Hackett and West cruised in the first round
After the first day of the state tournament in Pueblo, Durango High School tennis players from the left, junior Chloe West, freshman Emma Hackett, freshman Lily Chick and junior Ruby DeCora will have to hope for some luck to get back into the playback brackets.

Durango High School’s No. 3 girls tennis doubles team of Emma Hackett and Chloe West won Thursday’s first round match, but lost in the quarterfinals of the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Girls Doubles Tennis State Tournament.

The Demons team beat La Junta’s Kourtnei and Kamryn Osborn 6-1, 6-0 in Thursday’s first round. Hackett and West took on Ariana Arenson and Tatumn Mika from perennial power Cheyenne Mountain in the quarterfinals and lost 6-1, 6-1.

Arenson and Mika were equally as dominant in the first round with a 6-1, 6-1 win against Evergreen’s No. 3 team. They will play in the semifinals against Kent Denver’s Madeline Bragg and Grace Hawkey with Durango looking on as interested spectators. If the Cheyenne Mountain team wins, Hackett and West will play in the playback rounds of the tournament.

Durango’s No. 4 pair of Lily Chick and Ruby DeCora came out very strong in a dominant 6-1 first-set win. Their opponents, Lindsey Halverson and Liz Van der Torre from Greeley’s University High School, came roaring back to win the second set 6-4. With the momentum on their side, the University team stormed through the third set tiebreaker with a 6-1 win. Chick and DeCora will get a chance in the playback, however, as Halverson and Van der Torre won their quarterfinal matchup 6-3, 6-4 against Colorado Academy.

The semifinals and start at 9 a.m. Friday and the playback matches will begin immediately after.
