Durango’s roads, trails no longer safe

I have read with horror that someone was killed on the Animas River Trail. Yes, killed. The trail is no longer a safe place for anyone, unless you’re walking slowly and watching out for everything.

In addition to loose dogs, the e-bikers have gotten out of hand, especially in the summer. Tourists come for the weekend, or whatever, and decide, “Let’s rent an e-bike.” They have no clue how to ride one, and as a result, I’ve had many close calls and then a very mean crash a year ago.

A woman was stopped in the middle of the trail chatting it up, blocking it. So I had to last-minute swerve around her, lost control, crashed, bloodied and bruised my leg, and was grateful I didn’t have broken bones. I no longer ride my bike – it’s not safe on the roads or the trail. What a loss.

And alas, someone has just died as a result of the hazards out there. I guess that’s what it takes. Impossible situation, unless you stop e-bikes and loose dogs, somehow. You could station trail trackers (similar to downtown ambassadors) all along the trail to prevent problems – just an idea.

My deepest condolences to the family.
