Durango’s Robinette named to CHSAA All-State Honorable Mention

Demon had standout numbers, but reserved to honorable mention

No Mountain League player was able to crack the Colorado High School Activities Association Class 4A Boys Lacrosse All-State first or second teams.

So Durango’s Kyle Robinette had to settle for honorable mention despite finishing with some of the best regular-season statistics.

The Durango High School junior was one of 10 Mountain League players named to the 23-member honorable mention team. Dawson and Valor Christian, the two teams that played for the state championship, made up the bulk of the all-state rosters.

Robinette’s selection comes on the heels of a second-team all-state nomination from the Colorado High School Lacrosse Coaches Association and a first-team All-Mountain League nomination.

“I’m super proud of our team and for Kyle for having a great year,” DHS head coach John Robinette said. “He had a lot of great teammates around him and put in a lot of work in the offseason to improve his game and help his team.”

The Demons finished the season 8-8 overall with a first-round state tournament loss to eventual state champion Valor Christian. Robinette finished with 56 goals and 20 assists. His goals ranked second in the state going into the postseason, and he was one of the top faceoff winners at 66 percent, good for seventh in the state. His 131 ground balls also ranked second in the state at the end of the regular season.

“It’s huge to have a kid from Durango named to the CHSAA all-state, even as honorable mention,” coach Robinette said. “With no Mountain conference kids on first or second team, it just means our kids need to work that much harder to prove themselves and make waves.”

In three year of varsity lacrosse, Robinette has 92 goals and 54 assists and has more than doubled his goals each season along the way. He will look to lead a strong Demons roster in 2017 for his senior season.

“We hope to get more kids from Durango recognized next year,” coach Robinette said.

Dawson lost to Valor Christian 10-9 in the championship game. Dawson’s Gavyn Pure was named Player of the Year, and head coach Peter Devlin earned Coach of the Year. Pure, a sophomore, finished the year with 71 goals, 57 assists and 39 ground balls.
