Duty is to serve and protect, not bully

To the Durango Police Department: I am disappointed that I saw several officers get into power struggles with citizens at the Snowdown Parade.

I understand that maintaining order at a large event must be stressful. However, a police officer’s job is to serve and protect, not to be a bully. Please let us know what to do, instead of what not to do.

When someone asks you a question such as, “Where can I go to cross the street?” a positive response of, “9th Street,” is extremely helpful and appreciated.

Instead, when you say, “Not here!” it makes me see you as someone exercising power over someone without. In schools, this is called bullying.

I have had several positive interactions with individuals from the Durango Police Department over the years. I am let down by the few bad apples who are spoiling the bunch.
