Each district should elect commissioner

Regarding the article, “Should counties elect commissioners by district?” (

One is the basic concept of democratic governance. Typically, we, the people, elect our representatives based on who we feel will best represent our interests, in our community, district, city, county or on whatever geographic area is being represented. Why should I have a vote for representation in the east part of the county? I don’t live there.

The article reads, “But critics of the measure say the bill would create a divisive atmosphere that would encourage commissioners to push for matters that benefit their district rather than the county as a whole.” We elect individuals specifically to represent us and our interests.

The other fundamental problem with this issue is one of a discriminating standard. Counties with a population in excess of 70,000 are allowed to elect their commissioners by district, but the smaller counties are not. What does being smaller have to do with this? In other arenas, that would be seen as unacceptable discrimination. It is time for our elected officials in Denver to rectify this discriminatory practice and vote “yes” on allowing all counties in Colorado to vote for their commissioners by district.
