Early childhood teacher of year stands out for creativity

Lori Ewing was the first preschool teacher hired by 9-R
The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County recently announced that Lori Ewing, a preschool teacher at Florida Mesa Elementary School, has received the 2018 Early Childhood Teacher of the Year Award.

The Early Childhood Council of La Plata County recently announced that Lori Ewing, a preschool teacher at Florida Mesa Elementary School, has received the 2018 Early Childhood Teacher of the Year Award.

According to a news release, nominations were submitted by coworkers, directors, parents or community members for Ewing’s exemplary service to the young children in the community. Nominees were announced and celebrated April 18 at the annual Early Childhood teacher appreciation event. Ewing stood out among the nominees for her creativity, enthusiasm and knowledge of early childhood development.

Ewing was the first preschool teacher hired by Durango School District 9-R and started teaching in 1992 at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary School. She continued to teach at Fort Lewis Mesa Elementary until 2007 and transferred to Florida Mesa Elementary. She continues to be a master teacher – intentionally teaching her students, inspiring their learning and supporting their growth and development. Ewing has worked as a mentor teacher for several years in the district, served as the coordinator for Colorado preschool program sites and is trained in curriculum and environment design.’

Ewing models a lifelong learner and always strives to learn new ways to better serve her students.
