Early fireworks display attracts thousands to Vallecito Saturday

Although Durango's Independence Day fireworks are cancelled on Tuesday, pyrotechnics filled the upper Pine River Valley on Saturday night.

As fireworks had to be cancelled in Durango due to firefighters being busy with the Lightner Creek Fire, the show went on in Vallecito on Saturday. Bayfield's fireworks are scheduled to take place at dusk on Tuesday.
Vallecito's annual show is a volunteer event. The Vallecito Service League and other local groups raise funds for the show, and volunteers and staff from the Upper Pine River Fire Protection District detonate the shells near marina. Hundreds of cars lined County Road 501 as visitors filled lodges and restaurants to watch the show.
Local fire officials remind residents that the fire danger is high this year, and shooting most fireworks in Colorado is illegal.
