Twelve volunteers repackage artifacts

Twelve Road Scholar volunteers from around the world gathered at the Anasazi Heritage Center to inventory and store ceramic artifacts excavated by the Dolores Archaeological Program.

The artifacts were collected in the late 1970s and early ’80s. The volunteers replaced the original archival packaging, plastic bags that were crumbling and boxes that were collapsing, with sustainable packaging.

The Road Scholar service program is part of a multiyear grant from the Colorado Historical Society’s State Historical Fund to inventory, rehouse and update database records for more than 1.5 million artifacts unearthed during the Dolores Archaeological Program.

The Road Scholar volunteers learned about Southwest Colorado archaeology from Jim Colleran of the McElmo Canyon Research Institute and Anasazi Heritage Center staff members.

The center, three miles west of Dolores, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week. For more information, visit www.blm.gov/co/ahc.
