Master gardener program available

The Colorado State University Extension Office in La Plata County is accepting applications for the 2014 Colorado Master Gardener Program until Dec. 13.

Students will receive training in tree care, vegetables, soils, native plants, water-wise gardening, pruning and more. The training uses onsite and distance education experts to teach a series of classes.

The 11-week series will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Thursday, starting Jan. 23, at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. The cost is $275 for participants who volunteer or $625 for a certificate without volunteer time. Either option includes a copy of the textbook The Science of Gardening.

The training is equivalent to a four credit-hour course. Volunteers are expected to complete 50 hours of volunteer time in the first year and 24 hours in subsequent years.

To receive an application packet, visit the La Plata County Extension Office, 2500 Main Ave. Applications and more information are available at www.laplataextension.org.

Applications are due no later than Dec. 13 to the Extension Office.
