Sheep Day outing to be held Aug. 5
The annual Sheep Day outing will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 5 just east of Engineer Pass.
The event is free and open to everyone. Participants will visit with sheep ranchers in a sheep camp in the San Juan Mountains.
People will learn about wool and lamb production and are invited to the “Open Camp” to see the sheep, guard dogs and herd dogs; feel wool on a lamb; and talk with members of a ranching family to learn how each contributes to the operation.
Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management officials also will be on hand.
Mancos State Park to host astronomy event
An astronomy event will take place from as soon as the stars come out to 11 p.m. Saturday at Mancos State Park, 42545 County Road N, Mancos.
Members of the Four Corners Stargazers Astronomy Club will set up telescopes at dark to help people see distant nebulas, stars and planets.

Native plant society to host wildflower hike
The San Juan/Four Corners Native Plant Society will host its annual trip to view the wildflowers of Bridal Veil Creek, east of Telluride, on Friday.
This trip is for budding and avid botanists who want to see a variety of habitats and a myriad of flowers. There will be time for questions about plants and for photographing plants.
Participants should bring lunch, water, layers of clothing and rain gear. High-clearance vehicles are required. Carpooling with four to five people is necessary because parking is limited. The trip will leave Telluride at 7 a.m.

Navajo State Park announces programs
Navajo State Park, 1526 County Road 982, Arboles, will host these programs:
“Printmaking in the Sun” will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Rosa Campground building. Solar printmaking uses photosensitive paper coated with a chemical that changes color when it’s exposed to certain wavelengths in sunlight.
“Animal Tracks” will take place at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Rosa Campground building. Children will learn how to identify animal tracks, scat, furs and skulls. Then they will use animal track imprints to make artwork.
A beginning archery class for children, ages 6-12, will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 2 in the park’s amphitheater. The class will concentrate on range rules, safety, range courtesy and fundamentals of archery. The session is appropriate for children who have never shot a bow or children with some previous experience

Weekly bird walks to start at earlier time
Beginning Aug. 6, the weekly bird walk organized by For the Birds will be held at 8 a.m.
From October to March the walk will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesdays, and from April through September the walk will begin at 8 a.m. Wednesdays.
A variety of local nature organizations host the walks. Participants should meet at Rotary Park.
The walks last about one hour and 15 minutes. Participants should bring binoculars. The event is free, but donations to hosting groups are welcome.
Forest Service seeking people for committee
The U.S. Forest Service is seeking to fill openings on the San Juan Resource Advisory Committee.
The Secure Rural Schools Act authorizes the use of committees as a mechanism for local community collaboration with federal land managers in recommending Title II projects on federal lands or projects that will benefit resources on federal lands.
The committee supports the San Juan National Forest and participating counties in reviewing and recommending projects submitted for funding under Title II provisions of the Secure Rural Schools Act.
The committee consists of 15 members representing a range of interests. People interested in applying for committee membership are encouraged to fill out a Recruit Form and an Advisory Committee or Research and Promotion Background Information form.
