Rural-schools committee to meet

The San Juan National Forest Secure Rural Schools Act Resource Advisory Committee will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 29 at the San Juan Public Lands Center, 15 Burnett Court in Durango.

The committee will review and recommend project proposals funded through Title II of the Secure Rural Schools Act for the San Juan National Forest and adjacent lands within La Plata, Dolores, Montezuma and San Juan counties.

Title II funds are available for projects to enhance forest ecosystems or restore and improve land health and water quality on national forests and nearby lands.

The meeting will include reviews of past projects and presentations of new proposals.

A public comment period will be offered from 11 to 11:30 a.m. The committee then will review and vote on recommendations for funding new projects.

Aztec Ruins to host Earth Day celebration

Aztec Ruins National Monument, 84 Road 2900 in Aztec, will host its annual Earth Day Celebration from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 26.

The event, designed for all ages, will offer ways for people to reduce their impact on the environment. Participants will learn from the techniques of ancestral people and explore new technologies.

Dozens of community organizations and businesses will offer interactive booths with various crafts, games, giveaways and exhibits. The monument will sponsor activities such as adobe brick building, a junior ranger recycling program and ancestral Puebloan farming. Other activities and displays will include solar ovens and rockets, fuel-efficient vehicles, recycled artwork and jewelry demonstrations, a plant sale and plant seeds to take home.

The Acoma Rain Dancers give two performances. Student musicians from Koogler Middle School will perform between the dances. The celebration is free and includes admission to the monument.
